He gives one last snarl-- a jerk toward her just to see if she'll jump, or scream. Then he's leaving at last, knowing if he goes, if she doesn't stop him, she's dead. He's moving toward the first door he sees to pull it open and slam it behind him.
And then, suddenly, he's choking on his own breath as he sinks down to the ground. His eyes prick but he forces that down hard. His hands rise up shaking to cover his ears and he holds his breath and waits, hoping that maybe, they'll take her elsewhere.
Or at very motherfucking least, the screams won't last long when she's culled. And then maybe, he won't have to hear his friend in them. She can't outrun her fates. Not no more than any of them can.
