Test Drive Meme

Welcome to Panem. You have been selected to participate in the 75th Annual Hunger Games!

Premise: This Arena is designed to be a small mock arena not all that dissimilar to the in-game arenas we run here at The Games. The party is similar to some of the gathering logs we have inside the Capitol when an Arena begins. Our hope is to give new and prospective players a place to get their feet wet, and get a feel for the fun (and bloody) mess that goes on around here.

This meme is open to anyone and everyone who would like to play. Current cast members, veteran and new, as well as anyone just wanting top drop in and have some fun!

How To Play.

Current cast members - you may tag into this arena in any way you choose, even cast members who aren't or are no longer tributes.

***An important side note, as it is within the confines of the Area in-game, all powers are lessened/nullified to bring any character down to a vincible level. (I.E. Make more magical/super-powered characters easier to actually kill for a normal person). Rule of thumb: If it's a physical difference, the Capitol will not mutilate it out (wings, etc), but other wise it's gone.

The Arena.

Tributes are raised in a circle around the Cornucopia; they are all dressed in safari outfits, including the little hats, and slathered in bug spray and sunscreen. They look amongst each other at the start of the Cornucopia. At the center of the circle is a fountain where a dancing hippo spits water into a circular pool around it. There's an engraving in embossed letters around the one-foot rim of the pool: PANEM NATIONAL ZOO.

Floating in the water of the brass fountain are supplies that the Tributes should find useful: medical kits, sleeping bags, and most importantly, weapons. Ropes, bo staffs, nunchuks, daggers and spears are all in ready supply a mere hundred yard sprint from the Tributes.

There are four paths away from the Cornucopia - into a swampy pit to the south, which, unbeknownt to Tributes, hosts alligators and crocodiles who've missed their scheduled feeding. To the west, into a dark building where boxes cut into the walls reveal that there were once tanks for creepy crawlies, but the glass has been removed. Through a gift-shop to the north, stuffed with plush animals (many of which are filled with razor blades, or other sweet little surprises). Or down an asphalt pathway to the east, winding through tall cages that may provide shelter from the other Tributes - but not necessarily the enclosure's inhabitants.

The countdown blares out in the humid air.

3...2...1...

Let the Games begin.

-/-

The Party.

Back in the Capitol, the Cornucopia is being celebrated with a lavish party. Animal couture is all the rage, and Capitol celebrities have dressed for the occasion by having their teeth elongated and their irises surgically altered to give the appearance of slit pupils. The wine is flowing freely, and the centerpiece of this particular viewing party is what appears to be a pig the size of a hippopotamus being roasted on a spit.

Screens throughout the large ballroom in which this takes place are showing the gruesome footage of the first bloodbath of what promises to be a delightfully ugly Arena. Tongueless Avoxes carry platters with little quail eggs in cups, silently offering them to all the guests. Caesar Flickerman, trademark blue hair now replaced by what appear to be feathers growing directly from his scalp, announces every gorey detail between oohing and ahhing over the dinner. Tributes die; Citizens feast.

Everyone who's anyone is invited.

"That'll take some time."

Louise wasn't going to kill anyone yet, no. Right now she was just adding some snark factor to this Arena.

"Let's hope the guy you use that on is dumb as a pile of rocks! Actually, think I saw someone who Literally ARE rocks, so maybe you've got something there."

The young woman jumps a bit at the sudden speech - but she calms quickly enough when she realizes that the girl isn't a threat. Not that young children couldn't be a threat.

A long time ago, she may have gotten upset that a child was even here. But she had come to grips long since with the idea that bad things happen to kids, too.

Flicking her eyes up and then down to her work again, she shook her head a little.

"You'd be surprised how effective a spear can be. This isn't for hunting people...it's for hunting food. Food, then fire, then shelter." Not that fire would do her a lot of good when the sun went down....

But maybe that would be different here.

"Still gotta get close to it to kill it though, right? Takes time, a lot of upper body strength. Kind of a pain. Now, how about you get something that can fire quick, hobble it? Then the spear would be way more useful."

Louise liked the idea of the games, but preferred not using all your strength and getting all stupid about it. Stupid people DIED.

Charlie was a very nice woman. True, she hadn't really gotten to interact with any other people in a while, but as a general rule, she had a lot of patience and was glad for company.

But this child's arrogance was prodding a nerve that really didn't need prodding. Pausing in what she was doing, she looked to Louise, doe eyes more than a little steely all of a sudden.

"Do you have a lot of experience with hunting and killing big game, sweetheart?" Maybe a little more curt than she wanted it to be, and maybe her voice was shaking a little.

"Because if you don't, maybe you should rethink running that mouth of yours. I've seen kids about your age meet terrible ends because they only thought they knew how survival worked."

The part that went unsaid was just WHO facilitated those terrible ends. She didn't want to think about that right now.

Oh right, one of those people. Make a suggestion, they thought you were telling them what to think. Normally she'd roll her eyes and go, but that sweetheart crap was just enough to play on her nerves too.

"Well, Miss, I don't know about you, but won't it be a waste of time trying to kill an animal with a spear when you can just stop it moving around. But hey, you wanna go all savage, get your cavegirl on? All right with me. I mean, eventually, we'll be enemies. When that happens, maybe worry a little less about me, more about you, you know? I'm small, I can avoid being a target."

[personal profile] lovelyassistant 2014-06-15 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
All right. Plainly, there was no use beating around the bush. Her tone flattened, and she looked weary.

"I wasn't trying to patronize you, kid. I was being serious. I've come here fresh from a place where survival IS the only objective. It's the only thing that matters. I don't know how long I've been there, I don't even know what year it is anymore - and honestly? It doesn't matter very much."

She took up her makeshift spear and leaned on it. Getting into a bickering match with a little girl wasn't precisely how she had hoped this all would go, and it certainly wasn't something she wanted to continue.

"Could I make a sling? Yes, I could. But a spear is more practical for immediate use if I can find something small to hunt for food. I'm not going to pretend like I could hit a rabbit at a distance with a rock, but at least I know I can stab an animal in a trap. If someone chooses to attack me, the spear gives me something I know I can strike with, and early in the game. Many will be unarmed at this point. Do YOU have anything to attack me with at this moment, if I came at you?

Look - you seem like a smart gal, so I'm leveling with you. I don't know where you've come from, and I shouldn't assume. But I've had to fight for my breakfast for I-don't-know-how-long, and so...I'm going to stick with what I know. I'm not worried about myself for a reason."

"Hey, hey! Relax. It was just a suggestion. Animals are kinda flighty, they run away when they sense someone up close. I dunno, maybe you might want to build a trap too. Just saying that a spear's sorta hard to use of they're not all up in your FACE!"

But to answer her question, Mindy pulled out her weapons: nunchauks.

"See, kinda new to this survival crap, I'm a city girl. Short ranged, kinda bad to get dinner with."

Whoops, a little too far. Charlie softened again, offering a little smile instead of the stern look she had been giving the girl.

"I'm sorry. I've barely spoken to anyone in a long time...I guess my people skills are a little rusty." She looked over the weapon thoughtfully, shaking her head a little.

"Those will be all right if you are looking to hit someone, but...you're right, those aren't going to help you catch dinner. I can teach you how to make a trap, if you want? Starving to death isn't going to do you any good. And I was already planning on making one after the spear." A beat, and then she offers her hand.

"My name is Charlie, by the way."

"No big deal. People are always tricky. I guess I did come on strong. Maybe."

People were useful as needed. That was why Louise was going to ride this "innocent little girl" bit as long as she could. It would keep her mind sharp.

So traps. Good. If she was going to survive her for at least a longer time, she was going to need to learn this stuff.

"Louise Belcher. You might have heard of my sister. Maybe. If you're into weird fanfiction."

Unfortunately, Charlie might not be stupid...but she WAS a little gullible. For now, she was probably going to buy the act - though from her reaction earlier, it was apparent that she could turn just like THAT when the act fell through.

"...I have no idea what that means," she admitted, giving a little shrug.

"But I'm sure your sister is very nice."
geez_louise: (wha?)

[personal profile] geez_louise 2014-06-17 01:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Gullible was good. For now, Louise knew she'd have to rely on the act when she could. There was still too much she had to figure out about her surroundings and what she could actually USE. People, of course, were always the easiest so long as you figured them out.

"Nevermind, way too complicated to explain. Long story short, I'm better off here, not her. Better start working on getting that food, assuming they didn't boobytrap it or anything. They don't do that here, do they?"
