Re: Luna

Luna feels pretty awkward around Phi! Phi probably thinks a little better about Luna than how Luna imagines Phi thinks of her - Sigma the special case aside, historically people who know Luna's a GAULEM have never treated her as an actual person and now that Phi knows the truth Luna assumes the same of Phi. Phi's argument against trusting her in the one ending she remembers only adds to that. In Luna's eyes, once the truth came out Phi started considering her as a machine/Zero's tool and after their time together in the Nonary Game, that hurts even if it's the reaction she expects.

It doesn't mean that Luna would do any less for Phi, of course. The fact that they were in the Nonary Game together and so know each other a little better makes Luna trust her more...but at the same time, as far as she knows Phi doesn't think the same of her which should maybe merit trusting her less. It's a weird conflict, which is why she feels so awkward. But her morals dictate a certain behavior, so she tries to focus on the positive feelings there more than the negative and it sums up to something like an attitude of "Let's be friendly, but we both know that you're the real person and I'm not." I kind of imagine she feels somewhat similarly about Kyle, with added "rejected mom" problems. Which...is a bit ironic, really, given some of the ideas we've spun on the Klim family soap opera.

"I can't forgive you, but I trust you" plus this
Okay really OBVIOUSLY SIGMA IS VERY IMPORTANT TO LUNA. Sigma's many things to Luna, both good and bad. I love Fritz for suggesting "administrator" to describe Sigma's relation to her because it captures their relationship from a bunch of different angles, even if it doesn't capture all of them. It works well, though: Sigma is her creator, her boss, her overseer. His rules dictate what she can and can't do on pain of death, and that's unjust to human morality but also how life is to Luna.

Of course there's more to it than that - it was Sigma's kindness that ensured Luna didn't end up pretty much dead inside and so Sigma makes her happy and grateful, which feeds into her feelings for him. I don't like to say Luna's feelings for Sigma are exactly equivalent to human romantic love, but I think her idea of love is influenced by human conceptions of it. Add in her beliefs about robots and happiness, and it's more of an unattainable dream for her - effectively her feelings are something like "I love Sigma and if I were human I'd like him to love me, but I'm not human so he can't love me the same way - so I'll be happy for what I have." Going through her route in the Nonary Game only reinforced that, and although that was Sigma's younger self she extends that to his older self as well. Luna knows very well that Sigma does horrible things and she hates it and the conflict kills her (literally), but she still trusts him more than anyone.

She does still have trouble reconciling Sigma pre-Nonary Game <-> Sigma in the Nonary Game <-> Sigma now in Panem though. She's kind of resigned to the fact that things are never going to be simple where he's concerned! Without the context afforded by being from a "successful" timeline, Luna's left trying to connect the dots on her own and so she's guessing at Sigma's motives most of the time. Their meeting on the Training Center roof means a lot to her and her feelings on Sigma, though, despite the mysteries. The part where he tells her "You're free to do what you want, but please trust me one more time" is significant because A) she can sort of guess that Sigma's up to something but can't figure out what it might be and B) Sigma's the only person who's ever suggested that she act according to her own will, even though Luna feels more beholden to him and Akane than anyone. It's not what she wished out of a meeting with Sigma, but to her it was still a sign.

The Celebrus drama that first time (robotness, Diana, Tabris, etc.) shook her a lot as she took it to mean Sigma didn't trust her after all, but assuming he's still telling her about Diana at the crowning that's mostly going to be resolved. Going forward, it's very likely that Luna's faith in Sigma is going to be shaken immensely thanks to the war but I see his request as well as the second coming of the music box (she's going to be so upset if it ever gets lost) as being enough of a sign that she won't completely lose her trust in him - not to say that she won't lose any of it ever, but at least she'll believe in him at the core unless he betrays her directly. So good job Sigma, you avoided a bad ending as long as you don't go screwing it up more?

I debated for way too long about how to put this last part, but overall Luna doesn't have to obey Sigma anymore and she still hates what he does, but if anyone suggested she break off connections with him or try to hurt him she'd refuse (or she'd want to). Luna isn't loyal to him in the sense that she supports everything he does, but when harming others isn't involved she would follow Sigma regardless because she loves him and because in her eyes it's the right thing to do. I wouldn't say Luna's mentality is always healthy (especially her lack of self-worth) but her morals/values are of her own choosing and Sigma is always going to be important to her whatever their circumstances.

The fact that Firo chose to help Luna in the Arena when he could have easily gone for an easy target is both the right thing to do and yet still something to celebrate in Luna's eyes - trust and betrayal are major themes in VLR, and the way Luna's particular timeline worked out Luna feels very strongly about people who trust her and people who show they can be trusted. On top of that he really seemed concerned about her safety/survival even if there were some crossed wires in the process over ideas like needing to appear threatening and whatnot. Although many people in Panem have shown her that concern it's still pretty new to her and that too means something to her! Add in the fact that he's a friend of Phil's (and she likes Phil a lot), and he's got pretty high marks in Luna's book.

TL;DR they've only had one thread but Luna feels very positively about him! She does think he might have a few weird priorities, though.

Haha, that's all so nice. And weird priorities... is pretty much right on the mark.

Aw, Luna. :< He hopes that one day basic kindness will be something that isn't so alien to her.

HELLO KARKAT.

Phil and Sansa are sweet and give Luna warm fuzzy feelings, but Karkat's relative coolness and pragmatism in their initial meeting reminds her more of more of Phi...which is pretty funny given how Phi and Karkat get along, even if Luna isn't aware of that. That isn't to say that Luna thinks any less of him; in fact she's pretty grateful to him for all the help he gave her when they first met. It does mean she's less sure how to approach him for non-business reasons, though.

Also Karkat mentioned that his anger is really popular with the audience in their first meeting, but Luna doesn't really see it. She thinks maybe it's an act? Maybe he's playing up a grumpy attitude? No reason to think he was lying, but she hasn't seen the signs so far.

If it's not too much since she had some solid interaction with both Ruffnut and Sandy this round...

Sandy's case was very unfortunate, and Luna wanted to help her more than she could have at the time. :( With all the descriptions she gave of stuff she's gone through in the Games, Luna really wishes there could be a way out for her...which wartime almost serves as actually, except not right now because Sandy's brainwashed into Capitol service. Whoops. Nobody deserves all that, so if they met again Luna would be pretty concerned for her well-being (and probably disappointed in the end, given the circumstances).

Ruffnut betrayed Luna and got her killed, so Luna doesn't trust her. While Luna understands why Ruffnut did it and even agrees with the pure reasoning (her own death is worth saving a life, when both of them would have died otherwise) she doesn't forget things like that. Bridge: burned. That doesn't mean Luna wouldn't help her if needed; she'd even work together and/or give her life for Ruffnut if she had to, still. But since Ruffnut doesn't get the benefit of being Luna's bosscrush, if she ever wants to try being friends it's going to be a tough sell.

Luna's pretty grateful for Cullen's company the night they met! Her entry into the Capitol was a huge overload for her, but talking things out with him helped her out. That he turned out to be the winner of the next Arena was a big surprise to her, but Luna figures that it means he can get out of the Games so there could be far winners.

She wonders about him a little bit now that she's in District 13. Luna hasn't seen him around, so it's not a bad bet that he's still in the Capitol and especially for the most recent victor this war must be one heck of a thing.

Re: Luna

[personal profile] didnothing 2015-12-09 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
If you tried to rank the people Luna cares about, Sansa would be near the top of the list - just below the family that Luna's served her whole life. She's barely ever had anyone who trusted or cared about her let alone a friend who was neither her boss nor dead within a few hours, so when she met someone who started off with "We're all in this together, so let's be friends and cooperate" it was practically a revelation. Since then Sansa's only ever been kind to Luna, and that only makes Luna love her more. Sansa isn't the person Luna trusts most in Panem - that'd be Sigma, who gets the advantage of a long and complicated history - but she comes in second, and may possibly be the one Luna feels most positively about since unlike Sigma she doesn't go around orchestrating death games.

It means she's that much more afraid to tell Sansa the truth about herself, though. Nobody but Sigma (and Phil in Panem, once Swattie and I get to that) has ever treated her as a real person while knowing she's a robot, and Luna herself has internalized the point. She fully expects Sansa to believe she's inferior at best and not even worth acknowledging at worst, but she also feels like she's lying by not telling the truth and so there's more than a little guilt there. She may tell her the truth eventually...whether circumstances are good or not by then is to be seen, though.

Luna knows from their past conversations that Sansa's been through a lot already, and while she doesn't want to ask about it (Sansa ought to have her privacy) it makes Luna that much more concerned about her welfare. She doesn't want to shelter Sansa, exactly; it's a little late for sheltering, and Sansa seems smarter than that. But she does want to prevent Sansa from meeting the same fate as nearly everyone else she cares about - which, incidentally, would be dying in the name of a game. It makes the fact that Sansa's still back in the Capitol that much harder to bear, because she can only hope that Sansa is safe and not on the chopping block for the battlefield or something even worse.
